BLT

Bacon, lettuce, tomato sandwich.

🇵🇱 Poland · Family: Imported Sandwiches · Region: Poland (Modern)

The BLT in Poland is the imported bacon, lettuce, and tomato sandwich, eaten as part of the modern, international side of Polish sandwich culture rather than as a local invention. The angle is exactly its plainness: three named ingredients plus bread and a binder, with nothing to fall back on. It is a sandwich that exposes its components, so a BLT is only as good as its bacon, its tomato, and the freshness of everything around them.

The build is short and order-driven. Bread is toasted so it stays rigid against tomato moisture and bacon fat. A binder, almost always mayonnaise, goes on the toasted faces and seals the crumb. Bacon is cooked until firm and rendered, drained so it is crisp rather than greasy, and laid in an even layer that reaches the edges so every bite includes it. Tomato is sliced, and good practice salts the slices and lets them drain so they do not flood the sandwich. Lettuce goes in crisp and dry, often positioned against the bread as a moisture barrier between the wet tomato and the toast. The decisive judgments are bacon texture and tomato control: a good BLT has bacon that snaps, ripe seasoned tomato that adds brightness without sogginess, cool crisp lettuce, and toast that holds to the last bite. Sloppy execution is limp underrendered bacon, watery unsalted tomato that turns the bottom slice to paste, tired lettuce, or untoasted bread that collapses before it is finished.

Variations stay close to the template, since straying too far makes it a different sandwich. White sandwich bread is the common base, though heartier breads appear. Some builds add avocado, egg, or chicken, which push it toward a club rather than a true BLT. The mayonnaise is sometimes seasoned with pepper or a little garlic. The fuller, multi-layer club sandwich, which adds poultry and a third slice of bread, is a separate build and deserves its own article rather than being crowded in here. What defines the BLT is its discipline: three ingredients in proportion on toasted bread, where execution is everything because there is nowhere to hide.
