How we ranked

Every place here had its menu read from its own website, and every sandwich on it scored by the site's Sandwich Score: the same engine as the Sandwich Builder, judging the recipe as the menu lists it for balance, harmony, contrast, structure, focus, composition and the quality the menu claims. A place's rank is the median score of the sandwiches its menu describes well enough to score, because one great sandwich is not a great menu and three great burgers do not make a great burger menu; a sandwich the menu only names, or describes in one word, is read for what the name implies and kept out of the aggregate when most of it had to be filled in. A place needs three scored sandwiches to rank; when fewer than three are described plainly, the inferred ones count too. The tier is the band the median earns: S from 85, A from 76, B from 62, C from 50, D below. The 50 highest get a full write-up; the rest are listed in their tier.

The tiers started as a draft from those ranks and were then set by hand on Tierley, where the list lives and where you can vote on it. The score is an opinion about recipes on a page. It has not eaten the sandwich, and it is not a review of the shop.
